Insomnia in Toddlers and Infants

Toddlers and infants can suffer from insomnia too. Here are some ways to avoid it.

Toddlers and infants have different sleep pattern from that of adults. Whereas adults need a maximum of 8 hours of sleep, toddlers need 12 to 15 hours. And unlike older children, toddlers and infants are the most difficult to tuck at night. This can wreak havoc on the parents’ nerves and may affect their relationship with the child and with each other. If this problem persists, it may lead to insomnia in toddlers. Yes, toddlers and babies can also suffer from insomnia.

There are some things that can be done to prevent it and these should be instituted as early as possible. It is important to condition the toddler to sleep at a specific time so that the body will get used to this routine. To reinforce this, a routine before bedtime should be established like reading a book or praying.

This can not only condition the toddler but also form a bond between parent and toddler.

The room should be conducive to sleeping. The temperature and humidity should be okay for the child and the lights can be turned low or have a night light in cases of toddlers who are afraid of the dark. The sheets should be fresh and clean. The bed should only be dedicated to sleeping. Do not let the child play too much on the bed so that the toddler will understand that the bed is purely for sleeping and not anything else. This way, whenever he is in bed he understands that he should sleep.

A warm bath together with your toddler can help him relax and play with you. Lavender scented bath products for babies are known to induce sleep. There are also lavender scented lotions and powder.

The clean feeling helps the child relax even more and feel good about himself. After bath massage is also good in helping the muscles relax.

Let the child choose what he wants for pre-bedtime activity. Let him choose the story or song or costume he wants to wear for role playing. If you have older children let them participate as well. This way everybody has a part and make this a bonding time for the family. This can also help eliminate sibling rivalry or forge a healthy one among your children.

Keep the child away from stimulating food and drink before bedtime. Carbonated and caffeinated stuff should not be allowed as this will make them hyperactive and you will have difficulty in getting them to sleep. Also avoid sweet food to avoid a sugar rush.

Also avoid rowdy games before bedtime. This will overstimulate him and it will take time to calm him down again. There are quiet activities that you can do so that he would feel good going to sleep. And if he likes the game, you can say that you will do this again tomorrow. This will make them rush time and go to sleep immediately.

These are just simple tips for parents whose toddlers have difficulty in falling asleep. If you are suspecting a medical condition as the cause of insomnia, it is wise to consult your doctor for proper treatment as well as find a remedy for the sleep problem itself.
